In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

A Word in the silence

Light in the darkness

One single ember scatters a blaze — millions of sparks,

Each a sun, a planet — glowing into light-years of space.

A Word births galaxies, spins orbits, sets morning stars singing,

Light giving life.

Somewhere a small blue-green ball sees its first sunrise.

Time as He counts it — all times are now — streams by,

shimmering light and encroaching dark

a Star slips to earth,

shines from the misty eyes of a newborn.

Stars spin, galaxies dance,

the Light flashes to the corners of our soul-darkness.

Eons, moments, till the Light extinguishes the darkness

with a Word cried from a cross,

splits the borders of death with Light

deafens the silence with the Word.

Planets spiral, stars rise and set,

Light blasts through clinging blue-green shadows

with the voice of the Angel,

the trumpet-Word of God.

Morning rays of a million nebulae flash

A forever-day, never night again.

The Word made flesh, God from the beginning;

before stars dawned in Orion’s belt,

before the singing of planets,

before any shadow fell,

before we — less than sparks

in the eons-long conflagration of space —

before we saw the Light of His glory,

God, first, last, and forever,

For the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is He
Sing a new song to Him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is He
Sing a new song to Him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings
You are my everything and I will adore You

Clothed in rainbows of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor strength and glory and power be
To You the only wise King

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings
You are my everything and I will adore You

Filled with wonder awestruck wonder
At the mention of Your name
Jesus Your name is power, breath and living water
Such a marvelous mystery

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings
You are my everything and I will adore You

Revelation Song, Kari Jobe

In this new year, remember who is in charge.  And who is worthy of praise. 🙂

People who live by the sea
understand eternity.
They copy the curves of the waves,
their hearts beat with the tides,
& the saltiness of their blood
corresponds with the sea.

They know that the house of flesh
is only a sandcastle
built on the shore,
that skin breaks
under the waves
like sand under the soles
of the first walker on the beach
when the tide recedes.

Each of us walks there once,
watching the bubbles
rise up through the sand
like ascending souls,
tracing the line of the foam,
drawing our index fingers
along the horizon
pointing home.

I’ve often thought that the sea and the sky are the only notions we have of eternity — flawed, because our atmosphere and our oceans have borders and ends, but nonetheless, the only concept we can truly have.  The idea of something fathomless stretching beyond our eyesight, and ultimately beyond what we can map and own, is the closest we will come this side of heaven to any kind of understanding of the infinite.

Hallowed be thy name…

It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High,

to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night,

to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.

For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands.

How great are your works, O LORD, how profound your thoughts!

(Psalm 92:1-5)

I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. (Psalm 9:2)

Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, through all generations. (Psalm 135:13)

although i am but dust

as measured in eons

or in purity

whichever standard of measurement

you care to use

i say

i am fleeting

and desperately wicked

the Holy One

dwelling in unapproachable light

enduring from before time until

after all times shall cease

not only pure

but able to purify

the Holy One

with infinite tenderness

(for You are infinite

and i am infinitesimal)

You touch my soul

and i become

like You

Our Father who art in heaven…

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.  (Psalm 73:25, 26)

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (Acts 17:24-28).

The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.

Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.

Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul. (Psalm 103:19-22)

when i whisper your name in the dark

i don’t call you

Glorious One

Supreme Being

Lord of the universe

Sovereign of time

God of life

though those are certainly what you are

i don’t even say

El Shaddai

even though you are those to me as well

i just say

and know

in the darkness

that I am loved

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

God said, “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.”  He placed His sanctity upon this day and blessed it and hallowed it as a day of rest…It is the only commandment in the whole Decalogue that tells who God is.  It places God in distinction with every other god.  It says the God that made the heaven and the earth, the God that made the trees and the flowers and that created man; this is the God that you are to keep before your children, and you have only to point to the flowers and tell them that He made these and that He rested on the seventh day from all His labors…The seventh day is a God-given memorial.

Pointing to God as the maker of the heavens and the earth, it distinguishes the true God from all false gods.  All who keep the seventh day, signify by this act that they are worshipers of Jehovah.  Thus the Sabbath is the sign of man’s allegiance to God as long as there are any upon the earth to serve Him…

God has given men six days wherein to labor, and He requires that their own work be done in the six working days.  Acts of necessity and mercy are permitted on the Sabbath, the sick and suffering are at all times to be cared for; but unnecessary labor is to be strictly avoided…And the commandment includes all within our gates.  The inmates of the house are to lay aside their worldly business during the sacred hours.  All should unite to honor God by willing service upon His holy day.

So long as the heavens and the earth endure, the Sabbath will continue as a sign of the Creator’s power.  And when Eden shall bloom on earth again, God’s holy rest day will be honored by all beneath the sun.  “From one Sabbath to another” the inhabitants of the glorified new earth shall go up “to worship before me, saith the Lord.”

Look out, Jurassic Park.  This may not be so crazy as you thought.  Scientists have been able to create synthetic bacteria (not that we need any more), and think that now they may be able to synthesize genes from extinct creatures.  This is of interest to them mainly because they can learn more about genes and diseases if they can create their own — control groups, so to speak.  If they can manipulate the more complex parts of a cell, they can “edit out” possibilities until they find what is causing the problem.

This is also of interest because they can build organisms that have the minimum number of genes needed to live, thus (they think) being able to find the organism that “made the jump” from chemicals to life.  Unfortunately they will not be able to create life.  In that respect, they are wasting their research dollars.  The other stuff, the gene manipulation, will be useful in treating diseases, sure (and also possibly misused to create even worse diseases).  But finding the “right combination” to create life?  Impossible without one ingredient.

And God said.

Key ingredient they will never have.  It’s sad that they will spend so much time and money looking to prove something that they cannot because they are not divine.  But maybe they will find something else useful along the way.  One hopes so.
