books like spectators forgotten in a row

crumpled sweaters discarded in the grass

scurrying stripes alternating sun and shade

splashes of color prowl the field

t-shirts tight jeans long skirts

maneuvering stringing jockeying

colliding snatching squeals and screams

intercepted by the shy one

unobtrusive stealing up

swipes the ball and zigzags down the field



she hikes her skirt and runs

hair whipping

wind fluttering her headscarf

a Haitian princess

absorbing students like a comet’s tail

swirling cluster of color

she scores

and with flip-flops in hand

dances in victory
