If you have ever thought that an animal might be able to understand you, or read any of Anne McCaffrey’s books with telepathic, mentasynth-enhanced dragons and dolphins (or any other sci-fi writer’s), the new developments on speaking with dolphins will make you excited!
The first one is that they’ve been able to make what they call “cymaglyphs” that show the different sounds the dolphins make, sort of like pictures of the actual words. That seems to be necessary in order to decipher what the dolphins are saying.
The other, most recent breakthrough is that they have been able to use touchscreen computers to help the dolphins learn that pictures on a screen can equal real objects. This way they can begin to communicate. They have had some luck with the IPad and the Toughbook, both tough touchscreens and water-resistant.
I think it’s very exciting that we might soon be able to communicate with animals in real life!
