…which I don’t observe, but I thought the service I played for at my church job was meaningful in and of itself. I especially liked the prayer asking God to shake up our lives and turn them into something useful to Him (paraphrased). It reminded me of a poem by John Donne that has long been a favorite of mine, but that I haven’t thought of in a while. Maybe I should think of it more often.

I like the imagery of God as conqueror and our hearts as enemy fortresses. Paul said it best in Romans: “For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19).
So, now that Lent has begun (again, a season of the church my denomination does not celebrate), I think (despite that) that I will take the time to be more mindful of what it means to be a Christian. And every time I want to eat sweets, I will remind myself to open the fortress gates and let God in.
